Mind the gaps!

چکیده
T echnologies for genome editing with arcane names such as CRISPR appear to present unexpected possibilities for biotechnological applications. But these possibilities have generated much debate about the ethical, legal and societal implications of the new genome editing techniques. While some associate their use with risks and dangers that far exceed those of conventional methods of genetic engineering, others emphasize the enormous possibilities—in particular of CRISPR as it is cheaper and more easy to use than TALEN or ZNFs—to develop tools and applications that can help to address urgent societal challenges. ...................................................... “. . . the decisive challenging point of genome editing is not necessarily the question of how to apply it, but the inherent vagueness that comes with any application.” ......................................................

Consciousness and Cognition
The problem of consciousness, also known as the Mind-Body Problem, is probably the largest outstanding obstacle in our quest to scientifically understand reality. The science of physics is not yet complete, but it is well-understood. The science of biology has explained away most of the mysteries surrounding the nature of life. Where there are gaps in our understanding of these fields, the gaps...
متن کاملSystem Slack in Cyberinfrastructure Development: Mind the Gaps
In the following paper we draw on Leigh Star’s notion of infrastructural orphans [7], those awkwardly aligned with the technology of an emerging infrastructure, to offer a cyberinfrastructure (CI) developmental principle referred to as ‘system slack’-the capability designed into an information facility to vary in it’s tolerance or adherence to designated standards. We argue that if CI's are to ...

Comparison of Species Diversity of Natural and Man-made Gaps at Different Physiographic Conditions in Siahkal Forests of Gilan Province
<p</pThis study was conducted to compare regeneration density and biodiversity indices in the natural and man-made gaps in the Tutaki forests of Siahkal in Gilan province. Data were collected from 60 gaps (including 30 natural and 30 man-made gaps). The results of species composition indicated that three tree species including Diospyros lotus L., Carpinus betulus L. and Alnus glutinosa L. in bo...
متن کاملCanopy gaps characteristics and structural dynamics in a natural unmanaged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand in the north of Iran
Canopy gaps are one of the most important structural features of forest ecosystems, and studying of them can have useful results and implications for forest management. The aim of this study is investigation of characteristics and regeneration within canopy gaps in an intact beech stand in the Shastkalateh Experimental Forest of Hyrcanian region, north of Iran. All canopy gaps and related fores...
متن کاملPragmatics and the grammar of anaphora: a partial pragmatic reduction of Binding and Control phenomena
The properties of gaps are intrinsically significant in that the language learner can confront little direct evidence bearing on them, so that it is reasonable to assume that they reflect deeper principles of UG, the biologically determined endowment that will be the primary concern for those interested more in the nature of the human mind than in the arrangement of data in the environment (Cho...
